Jeff Bezos, in his 2015 letter to Amazon shareholders, split decisions into two types. Type 1 decisions are one-way doors: irreversible, so you should be careful and deliberate. Type 2 decisions are two-way doors: reversible, so you should move fast and correct course if you are wrong.
Most decisions are Type 2. But we treat them all like Type 1.
The Cost of Slow Decisions
Slow decisions have a hidden cost: they block everything downstream. Your team waits. Momentum dies. The market moves.
A good decision made quickly usually beats a perfect decision made slowly, because you get to learn faster.
One Question
I do not have a framework for this, just one question: what is the worst that happens if I am wrong?
If the answer is "we can undo it" or "we learn something valuable", decide now. If the answer is genuinely catastrophic, that is a one-way door: slow down and gather more data.
Speed matters. But so does knowing which type of decision you are making.
